With prostitution being common for a young man to participate in during the 1920s, many people thought of sin when they heard the word "date." Courtship in America has always turned somewhat on money.A poor man would not have "called upon" the daughter of a well-off family.Men were expected to be economically secure before marriage.This was a problem for most men, as addressed in a 1925 article, "Why Men Won't Marry." In this article, a 24 year old university graduate exclaimed: "Get married!In the first decade of the twentieth century, men "called upon" young women whom they fancied by (with the permission of her parents) visiting her home.The two would spend time together, usually with the supervision of her parents so that they may get to know each other on an intellectual and emotional level.
